Berber arabesque Morcabe plasterwork of the 14th century Ben Youssef Madersa (Islamic college) re-constructed by the Saadian Sultan Abdallah al-Ghalib in 1564 as the largest and most prestigious Medersa in Morocco. Marrakesh, Morroco

“Marrakesh used to be the haunt of the Hippies in the 1960’s and even though it has retained much of its Berber atmosphere it is today a popular weekend destination for those who want to experience Berber Africa first hand. Its bustling market the Jemaa el-Fnaa is still as big attraction for Moroccans as it is for tourists but the great treasures of Marrakesh are its Berber Palaces and Islamic schools. I hope you enjoy my photos.”, Paul Williams.   See More of Our Photos of Villa Adriana Tivoli Download Marrakesh Photos or Buy Prints Download pictures & Images of Morocco Photos of Marrakesh andRead More →

Picture of Neo-Hittite orthostat describing the legend of Gilgamesh from Karkamis,, Turkey. Ancora Archaeological Museum. Symetrical mythological Scene depicting "Winged Griffin Demons", half men with birds heads & wings. Their hands are raised above their heads supposidly carrying the sky. 3

“One of my favourite art styles of the ancient world is that of the Hittites. The ancient Hittites disappeared from the archaeological record and were only rediscovered in the late 18th century. Hittite relief panels depict the myriad of Gods and mythical beings they venerated and the creative minds of the Hittite artists produced strange beings using a simple naive style that is both direct and endearing to modern eyes. I really hope you enjoy my photos of Hittie art, probably the largest collection on the web”, Paul Williams. Chaldean Assyrian relief sculpture slab from the northwest palace of King Ashurnasirpal II of a Genie standing. 881-859 B.C form Nimrud or Ni=mrut ( Kalhu or Kalah). Istanbul Archaeological exhibit Inv. No. 5.

“One of the most recognisable bas relief sculpture styles of the ancient world was produced by the Assyrians. The Assyrian panels were designed to intimidate and exclaim the power and glory of the Assyrian rulers and their success at subjugating their enemies. Envoys and vassal kings coming to pay homage at the great Assyrian palaces would be left in no doubt, as they passed the panels on to way to prostrate themselves at the foot of the Assyrian ruler, that to cross the Assyrians would lead to their destruction. Hope you enjoy my Assyrian panel photos “, Paul Williams.   See More of Our PhotosRead More →

“Pamukkale is one of truly unique places. It is visible on the hill side it occupies from miles away as a white gash that runs down the hill. On closer inspection it can be seen to be a series of calcified white travertine pools that run down the hill side fed by a hot spring. The waters have been controlled since Roman times to produce one of the most spectacular water features in the world. Patio de las Doncellas (Courtyard of the Maidens) an Italian Renaissance courtyard (1540-72) with Arabesque Mudéjar style plaster work, Alcazar of Seville, Seville, Spain

“The fact that the Iberian Peninsular, apart from the far north west, was ruled for over 700 years from 711 by Islamic rulers who called it Al-Andalus, is often glossed over by Christian historians who did their best to bury the whole period. Great buildings, like the Alcazar of Seville, keep the Moorish Berber legacy alive with its incredible Arabesque architecture that shows the skill of the Islamic craftsmen that once lived in present day Spain. I hope you enjoy these Alcazar of Seville photos”, Paul Williams.   See More of Our Photos of the Alcazar of Seville and Spain Download Alcazar of Seville PhotosRead More →

The Merry Cemetery ( Cimitirul Vesel ), Săpânţa, Maramares, Northern Transylvania, Romania. The naive folk art style of the tombstones created by woodcarver Stan Ioan Pătraş (1909 - 1977) who created in his lifetime over 700 colourfully painted wooden tombstones with small relief portrait carvings of the deceased or with scenes depicting them at work or play or surprisingly showing the violent accident that killed them. Each tombstone has an inscription about the person, sometimes a light hearted limerick in Romanian.

“When I die I wish I could be buried in a Merry Cemetery and have a carved wooden head stone that told of my short time on this planet. The Cemetery of Sapanta is an incredible place where you can introduce yourself and find out about the ex inhabitants of the Village. All Cemeteries should be like this. ‘One of the greatest architectural decorative forms is the Arabesque. Arab mathematicians created incredibly intricate designs in plaster, tiles, and wood to decorate their palaces. Photo of statue head of Antiochus I - Mount Memrut - Turkey

“One of the most spectacular mausoleums of the ancient world is 6000 ft up on the top of Mount Nemrut in Turkey. The top of the mountain was sliced off and the mausoleum of Antiochus I Theos of Commagene was built and covered with a loose stones that form a gigantic protective pyramid that caps the peak. To get up at dawn and see the sun rise on ancient statue heads high above the glistening Euphrates river below is a life changing experience. I hope you enjoy my photos”, Paul Williams.
