Wonders of the World – Erg Chebbi Dunes

” One of the most exciting things I have ever done was to sit in my Land Rover early one cold wet spring morning and type the word Marrakech into my sat nav. It just felt so unreal, yet thirty Six hours later I had crossed the straits of Gibraltar into Morocco, and was on my way to the northern Sahara. This was a journey I had wanted to do for years my Land Rover had been well prepared for the journey. Nothing could have prepared me though for the breathtaking beauty of the great Ergs, sand dune belts, of the northern Sahara. It was like entering and alien world where all the rules were turned upside down. I hired a guide for 2 days after I had nearly got lost driving only a mile or so off the road that runs up to Erg Chebbi. There are no signs and when you try to work out where you are on the map and you read in small print “Land Mines”, panic starts to set in very quickly and you realise you are out of your depths. The desert is appears to be wilderness where the danger to your life is real. This is not quite true. The microscopic life in the sands in more diverse and numerous than life in a tropical rain forest. It is ironic that you could die of dehydration in the desert when 3-4 meters below the surface of sand dunes water can be found. It is also a magical world of shifting landscapes that is both endearing and frightening in equal measure. The desert gets under your skin and I can see why they say that you can take the Arab out of the desert but you can’t take the desert out of the Arab. The same is true of the Berbers of North Africa and I thank them for their hospitality.” Paul Williams
